Vintage 50's French Madeleine De Rauch Red Evening Dress M/L

Simply dramatically stunning is this vintage late 40's or early 50's cocktail party evening dress. Draped in the front with a criss-cross to form a plunging V neckline, short sleeve, sash at the waist trailing down. The top layer is this gorgeous dress is a thin silk fabric while the under liner is a silky taffeta. Zips and hooks on the side of the waist for closure. The label reads, "Modèle "Boutique" Madeleine de Rauch Exècute sur autorisation speciale par Mendes Made in France".

From the web, Della Moda. "French clothing production company, founded in 1902 by the tailor Mendès Cerf, who made himself famous cutting and sewing coats and suits.
From 1950, it joined the prêt-à-porter company Carine Mary, which was launched by the great couturier Jacques Heim.
In 1957, however, the two firms, which had previously been complementary allies, became competitors and ten years later absorbed Mendès Carine.
It was the result of a consolidated success story, above all as the exclusive producer of the Carven, Madeleine de Rauch and Grès collections.
Later, it became the industrial ally of nearly all the first rank fashion houses, from Givenchy to YSL (becoming partners with the Saint-Laurent Rive Gauche), from Dessès to Ungaro, from Laroche to Patou."
From a New York Times 1957 article, ""A growing trend in France that is awaking the interest of American stores is the manufacture of ready-to-wear clothes. The models shown here come from three wholesale concerns that caught the eye of American buyers in Paris recently. They are Mendes, Maria Carine and Brigitte. The first two manufacture clothes especially created for them, on a royalty basis; Brigitte does all its own designing. All the fashions bear the famous "Made in France" label, and those originated by members of the couture carry their famous names as well...It will be interesting to see how the movement fares. One of the results may well be that more of the great couture houses in Paris will branch out into ready-to-wear designing". The Madeleine de Rauch dresses were sold were sold in the best stores: Bergdorf Goodman, Bonwit Teller, Lord & Taylor and De Pinna in Manhattan; I. Magnin in California; Neiman-Marcus in Texas; Marshall Field in Chicago. In the mid fifties, prices for the line ranged from about $80-$179; by the midsixties, they had upped to about $130-$320.
