How to Measure Vintage Clothing
How do I measure Vintage Clothing so that I know it will fit me?
Please note all items are laid flat and measured to the fullest fit, then multiplied by 2 (X2). For example, a ladies dress is laid on a flat surface. Then measure from underarm seam to underarm seam, X2 for the bust size. Do the same for the waist and hips. For the length of the dress, hold the measuring tape, at the point where the shoulder seam and collar seam meet, then measure straight down to the bottom, this gives you the length measurement. For the sleeve length, measure the outside (top edge, not underarm) from the shoulder seam to the cuff. Please measure a similar garment of yours that currently fits comfortably, and compare the measurements. Please note that you will need 'ease' or 'moving around room' between your measurements and those of the garment so that the garment will fit and you can move easily.
Please use the following chart to compare measurements of the garment laying on a flat surface, and measured to the fullest.
Please note: measure your clothing NOT your body. I measure the dimension of the garment, and you will need to consider what size you would want the item to be to fit well on you. (So, for instance, you would have trouble with it being tight if you were the same size as the garment).
