Anne Fogarty
A exquisite embroidered dress from the Resort Collection of 1954. When I acquired this dress, I did some research and here is what I found, thanks to vintage historian Scott . He shared the following information about this Anne Fogarty dress style # 632 11. This dress was available in 1954 just after Thanksgiving which was late in the year for the style of dress, or perhaps early for the upcoming spring?
A Chicago fashion reporter described it like this: "Beautiful as old brocade is this distinguished pattern of shiffli (sic) embroidery on cotton sateen. Anne Fogarty uses a widely V'd [neckline] and center pleated full skirt. In aqua or beige with tone-on-tone embroidery."
And here's an interesting sidenote (which also relates to the Perennial To-Crinni-Or-Not-to-Crinni Debate) taken from fashion writer Virginia Pope's review of that collection: "Standing in the middle of Lord n Taylor's Young New Yorker Shop yesterday afternoon, pretty Anne Fogarty was surrounded by an admiring group of young girls and women. They were eagerly questioning her. "How many petticoats do you wear?" asked one.
Anne had on a lovely white and gold brocaded dinner dress (priced under $50) that she had exhibited as part of a showing of junior fashions.
"Four," she replied and proceeded to display the underpinnings in question. There were two stiffened nets, a lace-edged 'cover petticoat' and a sheer net embroidered in gold thread. These held her skirt out in bell-like silhouette.
"What is your waist measure?" queried another in envious tones. "Eighteen inches," came the reply. She added that she wore a cinch to keep her waistline under control.
The Anne Fogarty styles, which concluded the Lord & Taylor showing of resort and holiday styles in 5 to 15 sizes by several designers, were in cottons, silks, and exquisite sheers embroidered in gold to suggest the popular Indian saris..."
Thankfully this dress has a larger waist than an 18"!!!
